Meanwhile, the Veteran-version has essentially the same drops as the Champion, so it's not a bad idea to aim for that one. while you certainly CAN encounter him on Apprentice-maps, there's really no point in doing so. So if you go into the area where he's hanging out this week and spot a hallway with two encounters in it, one of them is almost certainly the Thing. Outside of the Crimson Court, you'll never get two hallway-fights in the same hallway - unless one of them is a 'special' encounter like the Thing. If you've got good scouting, you can sometimes spot him in advance, actually. Rather, he'll pop up as a hallway-fight - if you've done every available hallway-battle and haven't met him, he's not there and there's no point in carrying on.
I don't think the Thing can appear as a 'random' encounter, the way the Collector does.
